ComEd Selects Wire Pulse’s Reel Sense to Modernize Cable Operations
Data-driven platform improves visibility, efficiency, and management of critical wire and cable assets
CHICAGO, IL, February 11, 2026 — ComEd today announced it has selected Wire Pulse to support the modernization of its cable operations. The initiative leverages Wire Pulse’s Reel Sense sensors and software platform to improve visibility, analytics, and operational control over cable and reel assets across the organization while supporting meaningful cost savings.
Reel Sense technology empowers teams to maximize the right inventory, at the right time, and in the right location. Practical yet powerful applications of the platform include:
Coordinated warehouse and field movements, locations, and times at the reel level
Reduced unused cable getting scrapped
Improved utilization of partially used reels
Decreased inventory supply costs
Empowered field teams and reduced manual paperwork
Reel Sense enables ComEd to track available and planned cable inventory while providing real-time insight into in-service conductor installation. The platform delivers end-to-end traceability of cable reels and conductor—including location, status, and remaining footage—across warehouses, contractors, job sites, and work orders.
By providing shared visibility for warehouse, supply chain, and field teams, Reel Sense supports a more accurate, real-time balance of material purchases, arrivals, returns, installations, and scrap. Digitizing processes that have historically relied on manual tracking enables more data-driven planning, improved field execution, and more efficient use of critical materials.
“As we continue to modernize our distribution system, we’re focused on using data to make smarter, more strategic decisions across our business,” said Valerie Colletti, Senior Vice President, Distribution Operations at ComEd. “Wire Pulse improves visibility into our cable materials and helps us optimize how materials are planned, deployed, and reused to minimize waste. Over time, integrating this data across our business lines will help us maximize every dollar we invest while supporting reliable service for our customers.”
Cable and reel management has traditionally relied on visual estimates, manual reconciliation, and disconnected records, making it difficult to fully utilize partially used reels or quickly locate materials during construction and restoration activities. Reel Sense addresses these challenges through a combination of sensor-enabled reels, smart tagging, and cloud-based software designed specifically for utility operations.
The Reel Sense platform seamlessly integrates with existing ComEd systems and workflows, enabling supply chain, operations, and field teams to access consistent, near real-time information from a single source. This coordination supports faster job completion, more accurate records, and improved readiness during storm response and restoration efforts.
“We’re proud to support ComEd as they continue to advance a more data-driven approach to grid operations,” said Jason Zielke, CEO of Wire Pulse. “Cable is one of the most capital-intensive materials on the distribution and transmission system and improving how those assets are tracked, managed, and deployed can deliver meaningful operational and financial benefits.”
The selection of Wire Pulse supports ComEd’s broader efforts to strengthen grid resilience, improve operational efficiency, and build a smarter distribution system capable of meeting future customer and system needs.
